I’ve been using my own Parent Theme for WordPress sites since April of 2016, and since then I’ve been through five versions, the last being version 1.0.5.
There have been a lot of advances in WordPress since 2016, especially around the customiser. Previously I was using the Redux Framework to handle theme options, so with version 2.0.0 these are now all in the standard WordPress customiser.
I know there’s a lot of interest in drag-and-drop themes for building sites, but I’ve always felt these aren’t suitable for all users. Sure, for users with a good sense of ‘what looks good’ they can be great, but for others… you can spend hours tweaking and adjusting things, and still end up producing horrible looking pages.
So as a compromise I’ve incorporated the Advanced Custom Fields plugin and built some flexible content modules that lets users build unique pages themselves and still get good looking results.
Version 2.0.0 breaks some backwards compatibility – so I’ll be rolling this update out site-by-site.
